October 12th Update

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our 3C families! I hope you all enjoy a wonderful weekend surrounded by the love and laughter of friends and family!

LITERACY

This week we:
  • completed a Making Words activity where we focused on creating long vowel sounds with "two vowels go walking" and "silent e" spelling rules
  • enjoyed read alouds that focused on comprehension (making connections, predicting, questioning and visualizing the story)
  • completed a writing project inspired by the book The Grateful Book

We read the book once, for enjoyment, during read aloud. We reread the book and looked at the connections between the experience and the gratitude...sometimes things went "deep" and the students really liked it (ie; I read books and I'm grateful for imagination)! I asked the students,  "If you could snap your fingers right now and be anywhere, be looking at anything, be doing anything right now, what would it be?" They came up with their own "experience". Then I asked, "What would you be most grateful for with that experience?" The goal of the project was to follow the simple sentence writing of the book and use few but powerful words. The students did a fantastic job!

NUMERACY

This week we:
  • practiced switching between extending increasing and decreasing patterns
  • learned to ask the question, "Are the numbers getting bigger or smaller?" as our first step
  • learned how to follow and write pattern rules, "Start at 3, add 4 each time." 3, 7, 11, 15...
  • played a Roll-A-Pattern game using different types of dice
  • completed a little quiz

SCIENCE

This week we:
  • finished our rock activity centres
  • reviewed everything that we learned using a Kahoot!
  • learned a few tips about studying from our lapbooks
  • wrote our unit quiz

PE

This week we:
  • worked on our underhand throw
  • practiced hitting targets with an underhand throw
  • played games to practice our underhand throw
  • learned how to play Chaos...an end of week favourite game!

TECHNOLOGY

There isn't a formal curriculum for technology in Alberta but we have a Tech Team at RBES that came up with technology guidelines of our own. Each grade is responsible for teaching certain skills to ensure that students are prepared to handle technology properly and efficiently during class time. When a student is working on a project online, it's important that they have the computer skills necessary to allow them to focus on the learning behind the project instead of the tech skills that they are lacking. We are starting with the basics in 3C. Our last two projects (Terry Fox paragraphs and The Grateful Book page) focused on the following skills:
  • accessing our Google Classroom
  • finding our CLASSWORK page on Google Classroom
  • using select all or short cuts for select all
  • changing font, size, text colour
  • typing
  • inserting a photo from google images
  • opening a new tab
  • turning in assignments using Google Classroom

LIBRARY

This week we:
  • met our new librarian Ms. Sacuta
  • had our first library period (Thursdays right after morning recess)
  • took out our first book and we need to tell Ms. Sacuta if we liked it or not next week when we return it

Ms. Sacuta has worked so hard to clean up our library! She has reorganized things and made them so much easier to find! Did you know that we have over 20,000 books in our library at RBES?

STAR STUDENT

This week we enjoyed getting to know Olivia a bit better!

SPECIAL VISITOR

Phoenix had his Star Student week last week but his bird Snowy wasn't able to make it into the classroom. We were sure excited on Thursday to have a visit with this special bird!

Here's a video of us dancing with Snowy!
