Part two...

SCIENCE

The students have been super excited to watch their caterpillars go through their amazing life cycle! Due to my passion for animals and biology, we've covered most of the curriculum before we even started this unit from our conversations, nonfiction read alouds and discussions and snack/lunch videos and discussions! Children have a natural curiosity when it comes to animals and I enjoy harnessing that interest and running with it!

May 27th Update

To say that May has flown by is an understatement! I can't believe that we are heading into June this week! I am not ready to have my last month with your amazing kids!

This around RBES have been BUSY over the past few weeks!

BIKE SAFETY

Bike Safety is always and exciting time at RBES! We kicked it off a week early with a visit from two Health Nurses with a presentation on helmet use and brain injuries. We've been doing this for a couple of years now and the presentations are very informative and interactive for the students. They have the opportunity to touch a model brain that has the same consistency as their own brains. The purpose of this is to remind them how fragile our brains are. Proper helmet fitting is also reviewed in addition to the symptoms of a concussion. The famous egg drop experiment is done showing students how a fragile egg can drop without cracking when the helmet is on properly...but without the helmet...things get pretty messy. The goal of the presentation is to encourage helmet use whenever students are participating in wheeled activities (biking, skateboarding and scootering). It amazes me how I still see kids riding around Devon without a helmet, despite all of our efforts with our Bike Safety program at RBES.

We also were lucky enough to have a handful of members of the Devon Bicycle Association to join us for our helmet checks again this year! Most of the helmets were fitting students well or were able to be adjusted, however some were not. For future reference, after the experience of fitting 300+ helmets each year, we can make a few general recommendations to save you time and money when purchasing a bike helmet for your child. The bike helmets that fit the best are the proper bike helmet style WITH the adjustable dial in the back. These helmets can last students for multiple seasons because they are highly adjustable. The hardest bike helmets to adjust to fit students properly are the "bucket" or "skateboard" style. We realize that students really like the looks of these helmets and often really want them but they are often very difficult to make fit properly. Even when applying the 2-V-1 rule, many helmets can still come completely off the child's head. Extra padding inserts must be used to ensure a proper fit.

Throughout Bike Safety Week students participated in a variety of activities and skill builders on the school field. We focused on starting and stopping, hand signals, control when maneuvering your bike through twists and turns and cycling in a group safely. On Thursday, the students enjoyed a Bike Rodeo in the arena! It was a great week!

LITERACY

I usually dedicate the first six periods of our days to literacy but with swimming eating up a large portion of our afternoons, I've had to cut back our literacy time to the first three periods. We have been focusing mainly on read alouds, read to self and journal writing. Students are finishing up the illustrations on the stuck stories and will soon be writing an "About the Author" paragraph.

NUMERACY

Students have been working on the concepts of division and how they relate to multiplication over the past couple of weeks. Students have been working with writing the fact families (2 multiplication sentences and 2 division sentences) when given a picture or an array.

Students are now moving on to more abstract pre-problem solving skills. If they are given only 2 of the 3 numbers needed WITHOUT a picture/array as a prompt, they need to find out if they have to multiply or divide to find the unknown number. This is proving to be a bit tricky for some students.
For example; if I say:

"I know that I have 24 lines in all and I have 6 sets."

Students need to figure out that they don't know how many are in each set. To find the answer to this, they need to divide 24 divided by 6.

A hint that we have been using is:

We know that division sentences ALWAYS start with the biggest number (the total number). If you have the biggest number/total number, you know that you can write a division question to answer. If you do not have the biggest number/total number, you know that you have to multiply because the answer to a multiplication question is the total number.

We will continue to work on these skills this week and start applying them to the problem solving context. We will be finishing this unit this week.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students have enjoyed learning about Ukraine! They were intrigued by the history and amazed by the population compared to the small land size! They ABSOLUTELY LOVED visiting Ukrainian Village! We definitely didn't get a chance to see everything during our stay and I know that many of them were talking about wanting to go back...maybe a nice family day trip in the summer?

May 4th Update

Wow! I can't believe that we only have two months of school left! It's crazy!!!

Things have been super busy around RBES over the past few weeks! There is always so much going on...so many opportunities!

LITERACY

We are almost finished writing our first stuck story and the students are really enjoying the process! Most of the students were overwhelmed by working independently so we decided to continue to write the story as a team. We discuss our story plan as a group and students take turns coming up with sentences, specific verbs, dialogue, etc. They are loving our story and can't wait to share it with you! Once we finish writing the last paragraph and a half, students will receive a typed copy including their own setting introduction to illustrate into a real picture book.

Here's a sneak peek into our story (our character and motive introduction):

Jacob and his family gathered up the dishes from their picnic lunch on the beach. Shaking off the sand, Jacob stood facing his parents. “I want to go for a walk down the beach. Can I go?” asked Jacob.
“Sure! Have fun!” chirped his Mom.
Slowly Jacob strolled down the beach.  After a few minutes he started to feel thirsty. Up a tall tree trunk Jacob gazed. “Coconuts! Awesome! I can climb up and grab one so that I can drink the milk inside!” yelled the thirsty boy.

Isn't it awesome!?!?!

In reading, students continue to enjoy Wonder. The discussions that we have during and after reading are insightful. We have been discussing things like friendship, empathy, standing up for what's right, making choices that feel good to you and character traits that they want to possess versus those that they want to avoid. They are able to critically look at the characters in the book and discuss what they like about them and what they don't like about them. I hear things like, "I would never want to be like Julian! I want to be a kind person like Summer!"

NUMERACY

We are wrapping up our unit on multiplication and heading into division. Students are responsible for knowing their basic facts up to 5x5 in grade three. I will be sending home a challenge with the students on Monday that pushes them to learn their basic facts to 5x10. Stay tuned for the Yogurt Parfait Challenge!

Being just introduced to multiplication, students are focusing on the concrete idea of multiplication. Multiplication is a short cut to repeated addition. When there are equal groups of objects that need to be added up, you can use multiplication to find out the total or product. Students can use skip counting, drawing a picture, drawing an array or doing repeated addition to come up with the answer to any multiplication question.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The students LOVED learning about Tunisia! We finished up our unit with our Tunisia Day celebration on Friday. Due to the busy nature of the afternoon, as Mrs. Gross and Miss Strawson can attest to, I didn't have the chance to take a single picture! I apologize for that! It was so much fun and the kids really enjoyed the Mancala game, weaving project, bean mosaic project and food! You can add couscous, baklava and flatbread with olive oil to your meal plans! Dates...not so much!

MISS STRAWSON

Saying goodbye to Miss Strawson was hard for the students. We all enjoyed sharing our days with her so much! It was my first experience having a student teacher and I really enjoyed it. It really made me stop and think about why I do things the way I do...I had to explain it all to her...justify my choices. That professional reflection was really valuable. We often get so caught up in the day to day busy nature of the classroom that you kick into auto pilot. It was such a great mutual learning situation and I really appreciated the opportunity. Miss Strawson will be popping by a couple more times before the end of the year.

EDUCATION WEEK

What a great week celebrating our learning community at RBES! Our pancake breakfast and pj day was a great way to kick off the week! We were given a book by the Lion's Club on Monday too! The students enjoyed the celtic fiddle presentation on Thursday and the author visit on Friday!
