GYMNASTICS!

The students enjoyed a week of balancing, supporting, varied locomotion and safe landings!

What a great week!

This week was so much fun! We jumped into our new science unit on Hearing and Sound and we started subtraction! It was a busy and exciting week!

In math we brainstormed all of our subtraction strategies in preparation for our multi digit subtraction lessons! There are many strategies to choose from! Some students become overwhelmed with the multitude of options and are better served using Touch Math, which works for every question! Attached you will find a link to a YouTube video that does a pretty good job explaining Touch Math! We do it pretty much the same way, except I follow the 9 from the Touch Math strip! It will all make sense once you watch the video. The teacher in the video starts by explaining Touch Math with addition and then moves on to subtraction. She also covers multiplication, which will be relevant later in the year.

The students have really enjoyed science this week! The Hearing and Sound unit is extremely hands on so they are going to love it! Here are a few pictures of them during our first science experiment!

Last Friday, we completed a really simple but beautiful watercolour painting in art! It was neat to see the students' increased confidence after our canvas paintings before Christmas!

In LA we have continued to enjoy the novel Frindle. The students are improving their abilities to make predictions during reading! This is a fantastic boost to their comprehension while reading! They are eager to find out how the "word war" ends...they are going to be so surprised!

With skating this week, we lose a sizeable chunk of our day. To accommodate this loss, we will not be having new WWW this week. From now on (this week excluded), we will only get new WWW every second week to allow us time, every other week, to practice the past WWW. It is my goal that all students will be able to spell all of hear words correctly by the end of the year (even if they have to find them on their portable word wall and write them down).

Thank you in advance to all of the parents that are coming out to help tie skates and be out on ice supervisors! This extra phys ed activity wouldn't be possible without your support!

Happy New Year!

We are off to a great start in 3C! It might have been freezing cold outside but inside we were keeping warm with so many fun activities!

In math, we wanted to review our multi-digit addition to make sure that everyone was ready to proceed with the next topics in the unit! Instead of doing worksheet after worksheet, we played some super fun math games where we had to use our skills over and over! We used dice and dominoes!

We were hoping to start our newest science unit on Thursday but we had so many students missing, we decided to hold off until Monday!

In language arts, we started a new read aloud, Frindle by Andrew Clements. The students are enjoying it so much! We also introduced a new set of Word Wall Words and a new Working With Words activity! It was a busy week in LA!

In art, we completed a beautiful watercolour landscape with three trees! Before painting, the students practiced drawing triangles with rulers on scrap paper before completing the guided drawing. I can't wait to put them up tomorrow! They are going to look fabulous!

Reindeer Paintings!

We had so much fun completing these canvas paintings! We started by practicing our reindeer drawings on whiteboards and paper and then we got started on canvas! I was so proud of the students for taking their time and giving this project 110%! They turned out so well and the students were so excited to give them to you for Christmas!

Welcome to 3C Malkia!

We were super excited to surprise the students with their own elephant for Christmas! They have LOVED learning about The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the orphaned elephant project so it was an easy choice to add another elephant to our class family! We have been checking in on Malkia and discuss her latest shenanigans during our snack time in the morning. We've heard she's a bit of a stinker who tends to be greedy with her milk! We've just all fallen instantly in love with her💙

India Day!

The students really enjoyed their afternoon on Friday celebrating all things INDIA!

They had the opportunity to move from classroom to classroom, participating in a new activity at each stop! Mrs. Rothfos hosted an Indian feast! The students enjoyed butter chicken, basamati rice, naan bread and mango lassis! Yummy! Mrs. Tewitz and Mrs. Forchuk hosted an Indian lantern craft in addition to a cookie decorating station where students designed a flag candy to match the flag of India. Their last stop was back with me where they had the chance to dress up in traditional saris or dhotis, design their own henna hand, receive a henna design on their hand or write, choose two bangles and a peacock feather! It was such a treat!
